Basics · Anabolic steroids

Buying anabolic steroids? What are anabolic steroids?

Anabolic steroids are synthetically produced compounds that mimic the male sex hormone testosterone or are chemically very similar to it. Their scientific name is anabolic-androgenic steroids, or AAS for short. In this context, the term “steroids” always refers to these testosterone-like substances.

Anabolic

“Building up”—describes the development of tissues such as muscles and bones.

Androgenic

“Masculinizing”—this includes a deeper voice, facial and body hair, and increased libido.

Steroid

Describes the shape of the molecule: four interconnected carbon rings.

All anabolic steroids have both anabolic and masculinizing effects. For decades, chemists have tried to develop a steroid that has only anabolic effects. So far, they have not succeeded. Individual products differ in the balance between these two effects.

Testosterone was first isolated and produced in a laboratory in 1935. In the following decades, pharmaceutical companies developed other anabolic steroids to help patients recover from illness or injury, or to treat muscle wasting. Athletes soon realized that these steroids could also enhance performance. They have been banned in organized sports since the 1970s.

Basics · How they work

How they work: How anabolic steroids work in the body

Anabolic steroids work by triggering a signal in cells to build protein. The process can be described in four simplified steps.

Step 01

Binding to the androgen receptor

Hormones work like keys that fit a specific lock: the receptor. For testosterone and anabolic steroids, this is the androgen receptor. When a steroid enters the bloodstream, it is carried to tissues, penetrates the cells and binds to this receptor.

Step 02

Genes are switched on

The steroid and receptor move together into the cell nucleus, where the DNA is located. There, they activate genes that instruct the cell to produce more protein. At the same time, they inhibit genes involved in protein breakdown. In a muscle cell, this can mean thicker and stronger muscle fibers.

Steroids also activate satellite cells. These are small stem cells next to muscle fibers that provide additional nuclei, allowing the fiber to grow beyond its normal size.

Step 03

Conversion into other hormones

The body converts some testosterone and certain steroids. The enzyme aromatase converts them into estradiol, a form of estrogen. This explains why men taking anabolic steroids can develop breast tissue and retain water.

The enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts them into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which affects the skin, hair follicles and prostate and plays a role in acne and hair loss.

Step 04

The body's own production stops

The body regulates its testosterone levels like a thermostat. If the brain detects too little hormone in the blood, it sends the signaling hormones LH and FSH to the testes so they produce more testosterone and sperm. When levels are high, it stops these signals.

Taking anabolic steroids creates very high hormone levels, and the brain almost completely shuts off the signal. The testes then reduce their own production, and sperm production drops sharply. In women, the same feedback loop can disrupt the menstrual cycle, causing periods to become irregular or stop altogether.

Background · Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding: Use of anabolic steroids in training

In bodybuilding, anabolic steroids are mainly associated with three goals: building muscle mass, increasing strength and recovering faster between workouts.

Overview: The following points describe effects and usage patterns discussed in the bodybuilding community. They are not a recommendation or instructions for use.

How steroids are intended to support these goals

Protein synthesis

Steroids can affect protein building in cells. As a result, muscle tissue is repaired and grows faster than normal.

Nitrogen retention

Muscle protein contains nitrogen. Steroids can affect nitrogen balance, causing the body to retain more nitrogen than it loses. This is associated with an anabolic, muscle-building state.

Cortisol inhibition

Intense training can increase the stress hormone cortisol, which is involved in muscle tissue breakdown. Steroids can partly affect this process.

More red blood cells

Steroids can stimulate the production of red blood cells. However, an increased number can make the blood more viscous and raise the risk of blood clots.

Typical usage patterns in the bodybuilding community

Bulking phase

During the off-season, many users aim to gain muscle mass and body weight. Substances with a strong muscle-building effect are often used for this purpose. Possible side effects include water retention, increased blood pressure and strain on the liver.

Cutting phase

Before a competition, the goal shifts: fat should be lost while muscle is preserved. Users often switch to other substances and combine them with strict diets. A severe calorie reduction can put additional strain on the body.

Cycling

Many people take steroids for a limited period and then take a break. However, the body's natural hormone production often takes much longer to recover than the break lasts.

Stacking

So-called stacking involves using several oral and injectable steroids at the same time. Each additional substance has its own potential side effects; the overall risk is difficult to predict.

Pyramiding

With this pattern, the amount is gradually increased during a cycle and then reduced again toward the end. Users believe this limits side effects. However, this is not scientifically proven.

Background information · Substance overview

Buying steroids: Well-known oral and injectable steroids

Many different anabolic steroids are in circulation. Some were formerly approved medicines, while others were developed for animals and were never approved for humans. Below is an overview of well-known substances and their key properties.

Research notice: This overview is for general information and is not a recommendation for use. The products listed on this website are intended exclusively for research purposes and not for human use.

Oral steroids

Oral steroids are taken as tablets. Most are chemically modified (17-alpha-alkylated) so they are not immediately broken down by the liver. This very modification can put particular strain on the liver.

Dianabol (Metandienone), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Oral

Dianabol (Metandienone)

Dianabol was developed in the 1950s and was one of the first anabolic steroids marketed specifically for its muscle-building effects. It is known for rapid weight gain, much of which can be water. Some of it is converted into estrogen, which can cause water retention and breast growth in men. It puts considerable strain on the liver and has been withdrawn as a medicine in most countries.

Anavar (Oxandrolone), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Oral

Anavar (Oxandrolone)

Oxandrolone was used in medicine to help patients regain weight after severe burns, surgery, or illness. It is considered a “mild” steroid. Nevertheless, it significantly lowers HDL cholesterol, can damage the liver, and suppresses the body's natural hormones. In the United States, its approval as a medicine was withdrawn in 2023.

Winstrol (Stanozolol), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Oral

Winstrol (Stanozolol)

Stanozolol is available as tablets and as an injection. It became widely known in 1988, when a sprinter lost his Olympic gold medal after testing positive. It is not converted into estrogen, but has a strongly negative effect on cholesterol, puts strain on the liver, and many users report joint and tendon problems.

Anadrol (Oxymetholone), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Oral

Anadrol (Oxymetholone)

Oxymetholone was developed to treat certain forms of anemia. It is considered one of the strongest oral steroids. Medical product information has warned of severe liver damage, including blood-filled cavities and liver tumors, as well as unfavorable changes in blood lipids.

Injectable steroids

Injectable steroids are dissolved in oil and injected deep into a muscle, from where they are released slowly. They put less direct strain on the liver than most oral forms, but injections bring their own risks, such as abscesses and infections.

Testosterone Enanthate
Enanthate
Testosterone Cypionate
Cypionate
Testosterone Propionate
Propionate
Injectable

Testosterone (Enanthate, Cypionate, Propionate)

Testosterone is the original hormone on which all anabolic steroids are based. It is also prescribed in medicine, for example to treat testosterone deficiency. The different names refer to the attached ester, which affects how quickly the hormone is released. Some testosterone is converted into estrogen and DHT, which can explain side effects such as breast growth, acne, and hair loss.

Sustanon 250, product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Injectable

Sustanon 250

Sustanon is a mixture of four different testosterone esters in one injection. It is an approved medicine in many countries. The combination of short- and long-acting esters releases the hormone over a longer period. Its effects and side effects are the same as those of testosterone.

Deca-Durabolin (Nandrolone decanoate), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Injectable

Deca-Durabolin (Nandrolone decanoate)

Nandrolone has been used in medicine, among other things, to treat anemia and osteoporosis. In the fitness community, it is known for supporting steady muscle growth. It strongly suppresses the body's own hormone production and has been linked to sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction. Traces can be detected in the body for a very long time.

Trenbolone Enanthate, product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Injectable

Trenbolone

Trenbolone was developed to promote muscle growth in cattle and has never been approved for human use. It is considered one of the strongest and most dangerous steroids. Users frequently report sleep disorders, night sweats, aggression, and severe effects on cholesterol and the heart. There is little scientific research on its safety in humans.

Boldenone (Equipoise), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Injectable

Boldenone (Equipoise)

Boldenone is a veterinary medicine for horses. It is known for its slow, steady effects and a significant increase in red blood cells, which can make the blood more viscous. Like trenbolone, it has barely been studied in humans.

Masteron (Drostanolone), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Injectable

Masteron (Drostanolone)

Drostanolone was formerly used to treat breast cancer in women. It is not converted into estrogen. It is popular before competitions for creating a “harder” appearance, but it can accelerate hair loss and cause pronounced masculinization in women.

Primobolan (Methenolone Enanthate), product image from the ZuiverLab media library
Injectable

Primobolan (Methenolone)

Methenolone was developed in Germany in the 1960s and is available as a tablet and an injection. It is considered a mild steroid. Nevertheless, it suppresses the body's own testosterone production and affects cholesterol. It is also one of the most frequently counterfeited steroids on the black market.

Background information · Possible effects

Effects: What anabolic steroids can do

Anabolic steroids can have various physical effects. Which effects occur depends, among other things, on the substance and the medical situation. Some effects are also relevant to medically supervised treatment.

Important: The following points are not guaranteed benefits and are not a recommendation for use. Anabolic steroids not prescribed by a doctor can pose significant health risks. The products listed on this website are intended exclusively for research purposes and not for human use.

More muscle mass

Anabolic steroids can affect protein synthesis and muscle growth. Changes vary from person to person and are not guaranteed.

More strength

Changes in muscle mass can be accompanied by changes in strength. Training results vary; no specific increase can be predicted.

Faster recovery

Steroids can affect recovery processes and the body's response to exertion. Feeling that you recover faster does not mean that more frequent or intense training is safe for your health.

Body composition

Changes in muscle mass and body fat can occur together. However, anabolic steroids are not a reliable or safe way to reduce body fat.

Red blood cells

Some steroids can increase the number of red blood cells. A level that is too high can make the blood more viscous and pose health risks.

Bones

Testosterone plays a role in bone health. Treatment is appropriate only for certain medical diagnoses and under medical supervision.

Medical benefits

In patients with confirmed testosterone deficiency, medically supervised treatment can relieve symptoms and support certain physical functions. The aim of therapy is a medically appropriate hormone level, not an extremely high one.

Background information · Risks

Risks: Side effects of anabolic steroids

Anabolic steroids affect not only the muscles but many organs in the body. As a result, the list of possible side effects is long. Some may subside after stopping, while others may be permanent.

Note: The following information describes potential health risks and is not a substitute for medical advice. The products listed on this website are intended exclusively for research purposes and not for human use.

Heart and blood vessels

The greatest risk is to the heart. Steroids can lower “good” HDL cholesterol, raise “bad” LDL cholesterol, and increase blood pressure. Over time, the heart wall can thicken and stiffen. Users have an increased risk of heart attack, heart muscle disease, heart rhythm disorders, and heart failure.

Blood clots

Steroids can increase the number of red blood cells. If their number rises too much, the blood becomes thicker. This can increase the risk of blood clots, which can cause a stroke, pulmonary embolism or heart attack.

Hormones and fertility

The body’s natural testosterone production can drop significantly while taking steroids. The testicles may shrink and sperm production may decrease considerably. Many men become temporarily infertile. Recovery after stopping can take months and may remain incomplete for some.

Breast growth in men

Some testosterone is converted into estrogen. This can cause breast tissue to grow in men—a condition known as gynecomastia. Once actual glandular tissue has formed, it often does not go away on its own and may require medical treatment.

Liver

Oral steroids in particular can put a heavy strain on the liver. Possible effects include impaired bile flow, blood-filled cavities in the liver and, in rare cases, liver tumors. Liver damage often causes symptoms only once it is already advanced.

Kidneys

Long-term use can damage the kidneys. Scarring of the kidney filtering units and loss of kidney function have been reported in steroid users, especially when combined with very high muscle mass and a high-protein diet.

Skin and hair

Severe acne, especially on the back, chest and shoulders, is common. Oily skin and stretch marks can also occur. In people with a genetic predisposition, steroids can accelerate hair loss.

Prostate

Steroids can stimulate prostate growth. This can lead to an enlarged prostate and problems urinating.

Side effects in women

Women are sensitive to the masculinizing effects. Possible changes include a deeper voice, facial and body hair, an enlarged clitoris, irregular or absent periods, and male-pattern hair loss. A deeper voice in particular can be permanent.

Side effects in adolescents

In young people who are still growing, steroids can cause the growth plates in the bones to close too early. As a result, they may not reach their full adult height.

Mental health and mood

Steroids also affect the brain. Possible effects include irritability, aggression, anxiety, mood swings and sleep problems. Some users develop a dependence and may find it very difficult to stop.

Problems after stopping

After stopping, the body’s natural hormone production needs time to recover. During this period, fatigue, reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, low mood and sometimes depression can occur. Some of the muscle gained may also be lost.

Risks of injections

Unsterile injections can cause abscesses and dangerous infections. Sharing needles or ampoules can transmit HIV and hepatitis B and C. An injection in the wrong place can injure a nerve or blood vessel.

Knowledge about anabolic steroids

What are anabolic steroids?

Anabolic steroids are synthetic steroids similar to testosterone. They can affect the growth of muscle and bone tissue and can also have androgenic, or masculinizing, effects.

What is the difference between anabolic steroids and cortisone?

Anabolic steroids are similar to testosterone and affect protein synthesis, among other things. Cortisone and other corticosteroids primarily reduce inflammation and do not build muscle.

How do anabolic steroids work?

They can bind to androgen receptors in cells and thereby influence processes related to protein production. Androgen receptors are found in various tissues, not just in muscles.

What is the difference between oral and injectable steroids?

Oral products are swallowed. Some can put considerable strain on the liver. Injections bypass absorption through the digestive tract, but carry their own risks, such as infections, abscesses, or injuries.

How quickly can effects occur?

This varies depending on the substance and the individual. Changes on the scales may sometimes be due to water retention and do not necessarily indicate a corresponding increase in muscle mass.

Are the results permanent?

Results are not necessarily permanent. After stopping, hormone levels, strength, and muscle mass may change. Recovery of the body’s own hormone production varies from person to person and may require medical supervision.

Are there any risk-free anabolic steroids?

No anabolic steroid is free from potential risks. Depending on the substance, the hormonal system, cardiovascular system, liver, fertility, and mental health may all be affected.

What side effects can occur?

Possible side effects include acne, water retention, changes in blood pressure and blood lipid levels, breast growth in men, reduced sperm production, and mood swings. Risks and their progression vary from person to person.

Can anabolic steroids affect fertility?

Yes. The body’s own hormonal regulation and sperm production can be severely affected during use. Recovery after stopping is not always immediate or complete. If you have questions about fertility, seek medical advice.

What specific risks are there for women?

Women may experience menstrual irregularities, a deeper voice, increased facial and body hair, and other signs of masculinization. Some changes may be permanent.

Can dependence develop?

Yes. Some people develop a dependence or continue taking steroids despite health problems. Anyone concerned about their use can speak confidentially with a healthcare professional or an addiction support service.

How can I identify counterfeit or contaminated products?

This cannot be reliably determined from the packaging or appearance. Counterfeit and contaminated products can pose a health risk. If you may have been exposed to an unsafe product, seek medical advice.
